Things to Do

The Old Port and surrounding areas of Portland and Maine, particularly this time of year, offer amazing activities, natural beauty, food, and drink that we want to share with you during your stay! Below are a few suggestions but feel free to explore on your own and of course let us know if we can be helpful.

ACTIVITIES

In the Old Port Area

1. Explore the Waterfront:

• Stroll along the cobblestone streets of the Old Port, filled with boutique shops, galleries, and charming cafes.

• Visit the waterfront to see fishing boats, lobster traps, and stunning ocean views.


2. Casco Bay Ferry Trips:

• Take a scenic ferry ride to Peaks Island or other islands in Casco Bay for a peaceful afternoon of walking, biking, or picnicking. Ask Carl if you need help booking!


3. Food and Drink Tours:

• Book a food tour to sample local favorites like lobster rolls, oysters, and craft beer from Portland’s famous breweries.


4. Portland Museum of Art:

• A must-see for art lovers, showcasing works by American and European artists, including Maine’s own Winslow Homer.


5. Craft Breweries:

• Portland is known as a craft beer and seltzer haven and brewery hopping is a must-try (see below for more information).

Nearby Attractions (Within 15-Minute Drive)

1. Portland Head Light:

• Located in Cape Elizabeth, this iconic lighthouse is a stunning spot for photos and history. Walk the nearby trails at Fort Williams Park.


2. Beach Time:

• September weather is perfect for visiting nearby city beaches like Crescent Beach State Park or Willard Beach.

• If you are interested in traveling a bit farther south, the coastline is filled with beautiful beaches from the calm Scarborough Beach (calm) to the touristy Old Orchard Beach, and even more a bit farther at Ferry Beach, Kennebunkport Beach, or Wells and Ogunquit.

• Duckfat: Famous for duck-fat-fried fries, poutine, and paninis.

• Otto Pizza: Gourmet pizza with unique toppings like mashed potato and bacon.

• The Holy Donut: Maine’s iconic potato donuts in creative flavors.

• Luna: public restaurant and bar at the roof of the Canopy hotel offering stunning views, eats, and drinks.

• Après - Our favorite! Specializes in craft hard seltzers and ciders in a modern, sleek space.

• The Portland Zoo, Rising Tide Brewing Company, Austin Street Brewery, Lone Pine Brewing, Goodfire Brewing Company, and Belleflower Brewing Company are all within a few feet of each other (and Apres) and just a few minutes from the Old Port for those looking to hop for an afternoon!

• The Porthole - Waterfront bar with live music, seafood, and great outdoor seating.

• The Bar of Chocolate - Intimate bar featuring martinis, dessert cocktails, and decadent treats.

• Blyth & Burrows - Stylish cocktail bar with inventive drinks and a speakeasy-style basement.

• The Independent Ice Co. - Whiskey-focused bar with over 100 selections and cozy seating.
